L'homme oiseau était un concours annuel ou les champions de chacun des 12 tribus descendait la falaise, nageait à lîle au fond, ramassait le premier oeuf de la saison pondu par les sternes, retournait sur la grande île à la nage, et grimpait la failase de je ne sais plus combien de centaines de metres.Le tribu du gagnant règnait pour un année et l'homme oiseau était traité comme un demi-dieu. Les missionaires catho' ont mis fin à l'epreuve.
The birdman competion took place every year, starting in the Mid 19th century. The champions of the 12 tribes climbed down the cliff, swam to the furthest island, collected the first egg laid by the sterns, swam back and climbed up the cliff face of several hundred metres. The winner was treated as a demi-god and his tribe ruled the island for the year. The arrival of Catholic missionaries in 1864 put a stop to the fun.
